What to Do Before Remodeling the Bathroom

Remodeling is a great project to take on for people who are tired of seeing the same old thing in their homes. It is a fun way to spruce up boring rooms and to make the home more comfortable and livable. The most common areas of the home that are remodeled are bedrooms and living rooms. People tend to overlook the bathroom because it is not an area of the home where people spend a lot of time. However, bathrooms are very important because all the members of the home use it at least once every day. Also, it is more comfortable to use a bathroom that is well-designed and fully functional.

There are a few simple steps that have to be taken before embarking on a project to remodel the bathroom. Doing these things beforehand ensures that the project is well-planned, so that there will not be any glitches in the remodeling process. Also, this leaves less room for error, so the final design comes out being as close to perfect as possible.

Here are some preliminary steps in remodeling the bathroom.

1. Look for ideas on the internet or in magazines.

Referring to the internet or to design magazines doesn’t have to mean that the design of the bathroom will be copied from somewhere else. These sources can serve as inspiration in thinking of good designs. Looking at other designs can give the owner an idea of what works and what looks good. It may be possible to get some tips not only with the design of the bathroom, but also with the remodeling process. Design magazines or websites often give pointers to make remodeling easier and cheaper.

2. Determine the budget.

The budget is a very important part of any project. Before the homeowner can decide on anything about the remodeling, they have to be certain that everything is within their financial capacity. Most of the remodeling decisions have to be made with the budget in mind. If the homeowner is working with a limited budget, they may also consider doing the remodeling in stages, one after the other.

3. Consult an expert.

If the budget allows, it is better to consult and expert regarding the design of the bathroom. The expert can guide the homeowner in coming up with a viable design considering the owner’s lifestyle and their own preferences. Although getting the help of an expert is an additional expense, in the long run, it can definitely be worth it. The expert can provide instructions on how to save money during remodeling. They can also plan the entire process, so that there will be no errors and no money is wasted.

4. Assess the lighting and the ventilation.

Whatever the design that is going to be used, it has to be in keeping with the bathroom’s purpose. The bathroom should have enough lighting so that it will be easy to use. If there are only a few sockets for lights, the home owner may want to consider getting large light fixtures, or having new sockets installed. Also, the bathroom should always be well-ventilated. If there are problems with air circulation, one way to solve this is to fit in new windows or exhaust.

Is energy optimization a reality or a myth

Like most people, I care about my impact on the environment and I try not to think what the world will be like for my kids’ kids. I am sure by then, the world will be a very different place, just looking at advancements being made in technology and medicines, the limits are endless. I can only hope the human race at this moment in time, can lose the desire to make money out of harmful fossil fuels, crude oil and dirty power sources and allow the new cheaper greener alternatives prevail.

 I was privy to a conversation my wife and daughter were having about what our generation had done to the globe in general, and how her generation and her new born baby would pay for our mistakes. Now my wife who is a person who likes a good debate, stood her ground and absolutely slaughtered my daughter’s views. My wife started with the disposable nappies my daughter uses, pointing out that her generation of mothers used terry toweling nappies that were used multiple times and for more than one baby. She went on and on about what was used over and over again and how the new generations had made the world a throw away nation.

 As I listened, I got to thinking about things in a little more detail. I remembered my friend who was boasting about becoming green after purchasing an electric car. Yes it is far less harmful whilst he travels to work, but when I pointed out his green energy came from a fossil fueled power station, he was distraught to say the least. Humans have to stop thinking superficially and look at the bigger picture.

 I wanted to make a difference and one way I may be able to achieve this is to carry out an energy optimization plan in my home. It is harder to make a difference outside of my home but one step at a time. If I can prove my energy optimization plan works and saves the home owner money, then I may make a difference beyond my front door after all.

 After exhaustive research on the internet, I was ready to put my energy optimization plan in to action. Stage one was to remove all the wasteful and outdated light bulbs and replace them with energy saving ones, that I got free from the local council office. Stage two was to have the window company in and adjust all the ill-fitting doors and windows, thus resulting in saving heat and keeping the cold out.  Stage three of my energy optimization plan will encompass the central heating system. I intend to fit a timer switch so ensure the heating is only on for periods of time it is actually needed. This could save me in excess of fifty percent of my current bill not to mention the huge saving it will have on the environment.

 Is energy optimization (in Danish energioptimering) a reality or a myth? Well if you think it through it is a definitely a reality and one we all need to embrace.
